What are clear aligners?

Instead of brackets and wires, clear aligner treatment uses a series of custom-made plastic trays. You wear each set for one to two weeks (as instructed) before moving to the next. Because the trays are clear and removable, most people will not notice them, and you can take them out to eat, brush and floss.

Caring for Your Aligners

  • Wear the aligners 20–22 hours a day; take them out only to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and clean.
  • Brush (and floss) before putting the aligners back, so food is not trapped against the teeth.
  • Clean the aligners gently with cool water and a soft brush. Hot water can warp them.
  • Keep them in their case when not wearing them.
  • Some pressure for a day or two with each new set is normal.
  • Wear your retainers as advised after treatment.

Invisalign is one brand of clear aligners; other aligner systems also exist. Your orthodontist will explain which option suits your case.
How long does aligner treatment take?
It depends on how much the teeth need to move. Simple cases can take several months; more complex ones a year or longer. You get an estimate once your digital plan is ready.
Do aligners hurt?
You may feel pressure or tightness for a day or two after switching to a new set. This usually settles quickly.
Can I eat with aligners on?
No. Remove them before eating or drinking anything other than plain water, then brush before putting them back.
What happens if I do not wear them enough?
