Treatment Overview

What does an extraction involve?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible in the mouth, using local anaesthesia. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline or impacted (stuck in the jaw), as often happens with wisdom teeth. A small cut in the gum is made and sometimes a little bone is removed.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons also treat other conditions of the mouth, jaws and face.

An extraction may be needed for…

  • A badly decayed or broken tooth that cannot be restored
  • Very loose teeth from advanced gum disease
  • Impacted or painful wisdom teeth
  • Crowding, sometimes before braces
  • Milk teeth that do not fall out on time
The Upside

Benefits of Extractions & Oral Surgery

  • Removes the source of pain from a tooth that cannot be saved
  • Stops infection from spreading from that tooth
  • Can prevent repeated swelling around a partly erupted wisdom tooth
  • Makes space when orthodontic treatment needs it

Results differ from person to person. Your dentist will explain what to expect in your case.

Step-by-Step

What to Expect During Treatment

The exact steps depend on your diagnosis. Your dentist will explain your own plan.

  1. 01

    Examination & X-ray

The dentist checks the tooth, its roots and nearby structures, and asks about your health and medicines.

  2. 02

    Local anaesthesia

The area is numbed. You may feel pressure, but should not feel sharp pain.

  3. 03

    Removal

The tooth is gently loosened and removed; for a surgical extraction, a small cut is made and closed with stitches.

  4. 04

    Clot formation

You bite on gauze so a blood clot forms in the socket. This is the start of healing.

  5. 05

    Instructions & medicines

You get aftercare instructions and medicines if needed.

  6. 06

    Follow-up

Stitches, if any, are checked or removed, and options to replace the tooth are discussed.

  • Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side; avoid hot drinks on the first day.
  • Hold an ice pack against the cheek on the first day to reduce swelling.

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and is managed with prescribed medicines.
How long does healing take?
The gum usually heals in one to two weeks; the bone underneath takes longer. Surgical extractions can take a little longer to settle.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. They are removed if they are impacted, decayed, causing infection or pain, or likely to cause problems. Your dentist decides after an examination and X-ray.
What is a dry socket?
It happens when the blood clot is lost from the socket, causing increasing pain a few days after the extraction. Following the aftercare advice lowers the risk; contact the clinic if it happens.
Should I replace an extracted tooth?
Usually yes (except wisdom teeth), because nearby teeth can drift into the gap. Options include an implant, a bridge or a denture.
Which doctors at Genus Dental offer Extractions & Oral Surgery?
